Report from an international workshop on seine net fishing held in Keflavik, Iceland, May 08

With the growing interest in this relatively fuel-efficient method of fishing, the college invited speakers from Iceland and across Europe to share their experience and expertise in seine netting (also known as Danish seining, as this technique has its origins in Denmark). Lárus Thór Pálmason, the college’s senior lecturer in fishing gear technology and principal organiser of the event explained that rising fuel prices had driven a growing interest in seine net fishing and the college had been approached informally on several occasions to show groups of fishermen and vessel owners from other countries how seine net fishing works. The visits allowed an insight into how fishermen from other countries were dealing with the problems related to high fuel costs and looking to methods such as seine netting as one way of mitigating the problem. Programmes for visiting fishermen included visits to fishing gear suppliers, some gear simulation sessions in the small flume tank which the college has, and the chance to spend a day at sea with a working boat. These visits have been so popular that it was decided that it would be a good idea to try and pool a lot of the information that has been gathered into a workshop, and hence the international workshop was arranged.

B40_Abalone Feed Requirements

Abalone naturally eat seaweed of which some less abundant species are preferred. In culture situations where seaweed sources are considered it will be necessary to demonstrate that operations are sustainable to ensure no significant impact on the marine ecosystem. Furthermore, when abalone culture is proposed in Special Areas of Conservation (SAC’s) a higher level of ‘Appropriate Assessment’ will be required. This report is a guidance document to help address some of these issues and present options for individual scheme consideration.

Effects of electrofishing for Ensis spp. on benthic macrofauna, epifauna and fish species. SR652

This report summarises the results of experimental work carried out as part of “Design and Trials of Electrofishing System for Razorclams – FIFG 57437 and Seafish IPF funding project C85”. The aim of the project was to design and trial methods of harvesting Ensis spp. using electrical stimulus with the intention of providing a more environmentally benign alternative to existing hydraulic and toothed dredges. The results of this study demonstrate that the effects of electrofishing gear employing relatively low DC voltage and amperage can be effectively used in the harvest of Ensis spp. without serious negative effects on the epifaunal and macrofaunal benthic community.

SR624_The survival of skates (Rajidae) caught by demersal trawlers fishing in UK waters_IPF B007 and C107

Skates and rays are a common component of mixed demersal fisheries, and large quantities may be discarded. Given their biological vulnerability, understanding the fate of these elasmobranchs is of management concern. Estimates of discard survival are needed for modelling the possible benefits of management measures. In this study, the focus is on the Bristol Channel skate fishery, where on-board holding tanks were used to assess the short-term rates of survival of trawl-caught skates (Rajidae). From monitoring the survival rates of 162 fish kept in specially designed on-board holding tanks for periods of up to 72 h, the short-term rate of survival was 55%. Keywords: Otter trawl, Ray, Skate.
