Thailand Seafood Ethics Profile
Seafish commissioned a study to assess the ethical issues impacting on seafood species landed into, and imported to the UK from a wide range of countries. This Thailand profile looks at the main seafood products; seafood exports to UK; employment in seafood; human trafficking and forced labour indicators and rankings and research reports; ratification of international human rights and labour instruments; fisheries policy and management structure/administration; control of IUU fishing and related labour abuse; measures to protect migrant fishers; partnerships and improvement projects; and an overall assessment or criteria for overall risk assessment for Thailand. -

Responding to climate change by reducing both the amount of waste generated, and the amount of toxic substances released into the environment is a smart choice for the fishing industry. Carbon footprints relate to how much Greenhouse gases are emitted. For the fishing sector emissions are influenced by a number of factors including the abundance of fish (stocks), the steaming distance to fishing grounds, and the fishing technology used. But there are options a skipper can adopt to reduce a vessels carbon footprint by reducing fuel consumption. This fact sheet describes the fuel used by the fishing sector, it outlines the current emissions regulations and how these may affect the fishing industry. It also provides an overview of a fishing vessels ‘carbon footprint’ and how it can be improved. -
Multi annual UK fishing fleet estimates 2010 - 2020
This dataset presents data on annual economic performance for the UK fishing fleet from 2010 to 2020. The estimates are calculated based on samples of fishing costs and earnings gathered by Seafish as part of the 2019 Annual Fleet Economic Survey. -

A feasibility study of native oyster (Ostrea edulis) stock regeneration in the United Kingdom
Throughout much of the UK, the native oyster remains in a severely depleted state in the wild, having suffered for two centuries with over-exploitation, pests, disease, pollution and harsh winters. The native oyster is a Biodiversity Action Plan Species. Native oyster beds can form a flourishing part of the ecosystem, with many associated species. A significant driver for restoration of native oyster beds should therefore be re-creating and conserving an ecological resource in order to re-establish a biotope that was once common and covered wide areas of the UK inshore seabed. -
Seafish briefing - Organisations addressing labour issues in the fishing and aquaculture sector. April 2016.
Since approximately 2006, various concerns regarding abuses of workers engaged in the seafood industry have steadily attracted more attention, from the media and civil society advocacy groups. The main concern has been reports of coercive treatment of certain categories of both sea and land-based workers, through abusive labour and recruitment practices variously referred to as slavery or slavery-like practices, forced and bonded labour, human trafficking, as well as serious forms of child labour. This has led to more monitoring, and a wide range of governmental, inter-governmental and NGO initiatives to address the concerns. There have been a number of studies into the scale of the issue but further study is required in order to determine the international scale of human rights and labour abuses in the seafood industry. This briefing note: details some of the key reviews that have looked at the scale of labour issues in the fishing and seafood sectors; and lists the organisations addressing labour rights in the fishing sector. This document was originally produced in March 2015 and was updated in April 2016. -
