Seafish response to Consultation on the Review of the Animal By-Products Regulation (EC) No. 1774/2002
Defra invited views on the European Commission’s proposal to replace the Animal By-Products Regulation 1774/2002/EC, which lays down health rules as regards animal by-products not intended for human consumption. Top line summary of Seafish regional ethics profiles. September 2015.
Seafish commissioned a study to assess the ethical issues impacting on seafood species landed into, and imported to the UK from a wide range of countries. This work has been presented in three parts: an analytical report, leading to strategic recommendations for follow-up; a set of 15 risk assessment profiles; and a comprehensive literature review. This is a topline summary of the ethics profiles of the 15 countries or regions which Seafish, after consulting with industry representatives, has analysed. These are: Chile, China, Ecuador, India, Indonesia, New Zealand, Philippines, Russian Federation, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States and Vietnam. -
India Seafood Ethics Profile
Seafish commissioned a study to assess the ethical issues impacting on seafood species landed into, and imported to the UK from a wide range of countries. This India profile looks at the main seafood products; seafood exports to UK; employment in seafood; human trafficking and forced labour indicators and rankings and research reports; ratification of international human rights and labour instruments; fisheries policy and management structure/administration; control of IUU fishing and related labour abuse; measures to protect migrant fishers; partnerships and improvement projects; and an overall assessment or criteria for overall risk assessment for India. -

Assessing greenhouse gas emissions from UK Fishing Fleet
This report proposes a method to estimate daily fuel consumption and emissions of the UK Fishing Fleet using vessel characteristics. Coefficients are derived from 2017–2022 fuel records collected by Seafish in the Annual Fleet Economic Survey. -

Use of discards in bait
Further to the Defra ‘Fishing for the Markets’ initiative, this study explores whether discards from English vessels not destined for human consumption can be utilised in bait in England. Analysis of current discards from the English fleet and the pot bait needs of those targeting crab and lobster showed that the bait market could potentially utilise all discards in England. Commercial sea trials tested the effectiveness of a range of discards species as bait. These identified that virtually all species currently discarded by English fishing vessels could be used as effective pot bait for crabbers. But this was not the case for lobster catches where the sea trials showed a negative impact on the catch rate compared to traditional bait. The study concludes that the use of discards as pot bait will predominantly depend on the cost as they will be competing on price with a range of existing cost-effective baits already used by the potting sector. -
An assessment of ethical issues impacting on the UK seafood supply chain: Strategic report
Seafish commissioned a study to assess the ethical issues impacting on seafood species landed into, and imported to the UK. This strategic report is one of the key outputs. This includes a discussion of the issues and challenges in applying ethical concepts, particularly those set out in international standards on human and labour rights, to the seafood industry; an overview of the main issues for risk assessment, by country and region, by forms of employment, and to some extent by species; and the remedies and responses, drawing on the recent experience from Thailand. -

A Business Study of the N. Ireland Fish Industry
This study, carried out in 1982/83, describes the fisheries of the County Down coast centred on the three ports of Kilkeel, Portagovie and Ardglass. The costs and earnings of fishing vessels are given and the report points out that the catching capacity of the Northern Ireland fleet is in excess of the resources available to it and alternative opportunities must be sought. Included are assessments of the Northern Ireland consumer market. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
Chilled Seafood in Multiple Retail (2023)
Salmon continues to dominate the chilled seafood sector, increasing its value share of the top ten chilled species to 48.7% (+0.9pp), selling around four times its nearest competitor, warm water prawns. -
A Study of Low Cost Recirulation Aquaculture
The overarching goal of this study is to attempt to demonstrate a low-cost approach to recirculation aquaculture of turbot (Psetta maxima), a high value marine flatfish. The two main assumptions of the project are: • Recirculation aquaculture (for UK industry) is inherently desirable because it allows species diversification, enhances biosecurity and minimises environmental impact • Current recirculation systems are too expensive for the production of fish for human consumption, and would be vulnerable to price declines in the market as aquaculture expands in the future – and are thus not good investment propositions for the industry The project reared its own juvenile turbot at the Marine Farming Unit in Ardtoe, with eggs sourced from France Turbot.
