First year survival of bivalves on newly flooded managed realigned sites.
This study was undertaken to determine whether the length of existence of a stretch of intertidal foreshore created by managed realignment impacted the growth of Cerastoderma edule (cockle). Comparative growth as determined by average length was monitored for a periodof 48 weeks at three Essex foreshore sites. the Market Potential for Marine Finfish Species from British and Irish Aquaculture
Aquaculture is already playing a major part in supplying seafood into the European market - some 420,000 tonnes per annum out of a fleet landing total of c.6,700,000 tonnes, or 6-7% of the total by weight. If all the member states of the Federation of European Aquaculture Producers are included, the tonnage rises to some 1,000,000 tonnes per annum, with a total value of £1,984 million in 1999 - compared, for example, with a combined total first sale value of fisheries landings of some $452 million in the UK and Ireland. -
Focus on Foodservice
The total UK market for eating out was estimated to be worth between £25 and £28 billion in 20031. Twenty percent of all meals featuring seafood are consumed out of home, with evening meals accounting for the greatest share2. In comparison, just 14% of meals featuring beef and 16% of thosefeaturing poultry are eaten out of home. The foodservice market is therefore more important to seafood than to any other protein. -
